Houston Texans Football Team

The Houston Texans football team management guarantees a great tailgating experience to their fans and the opposing teams, when they come to Reliant Stadium. Tailgating is an integral part of football in the South and you will find true Texas hospitality in just about every parking lot. As with most teams, you will have your choice of official tailgating near the stadium or bringing your own party.

Official Entertainment

Plenty of opportunities exist to have fun on game day, from being part of a giant card stunt to getting your picture on the big screen. Making sure that fans have a good time is one of the key goals of the Houston Texans football team.

Before the game, the team operates their own pre-game tailgating party in Budweiser Plaza, which borders the north side of the stadium. You will find lots of live music here, as well as live radio broadcasting, big screens showing the pre-game interviews, and lots of food and drink.

The Budweiser Plaza opens two hours before kickoff, and while it’s free, it gets busy very quickly, especially when the Texans Cheerleaders show up to mingle with the fans.

If you want something a little more family friendly, you should try the Coca-Cola Zero Kruger Fan Zone, which is squeezed in between the Reliant Astrodome and the stadium. This area is an alcohol free zone aimed at families with younger children, so you will find a lot of games and competitions here, as well as visits from Toro, the Houston Texans football team mascot.

Making Your Own Party

While the Houston Texans football team owners actively encourage tailgating before each game, they like you to do so under very controlled conditions. The first thing that you will need to know is that you must purchase a tailgating pass before you come to the stadium.

You cannot buy them on the day and you cannot tailgate unless you have a pass hanging from your rearview mirror. They are available online, over the phone or in person at Reliant Stadium. Other useful information about tailgating in Houston includes:

  • One spot per ticket – If you drive a small car and can fit your chairs and gear in just the one parking bay, you are all set. However, if you need extra room for a canopy or if you have an RV, you will need to buy an extra ticket for each extra space that you need.

  • Saving spots – The Texans want fans to celebrate together, but have banned the practice of saving spaces for other fans. To party together, you and your friends need to arrive at the same time to secure adjacent parking spots.

  • Respect your neighbors –The Texans tailgating rules state that no music system can be more than 18 inches wide or 12 inches high. You also cannot play your music over 68 decibels loud, the parking lot security guards check the loudness.

Parties Mean Prizes

Anyone who adheres to those rules is eligible for entry into the H-E-B Tailgater of the Game competition. This is a free competition run by the Houston Texans football team and is judged by anonymous scouts who roam the parking lot looking for the tailgate with the best decorations, food, atmosphere and attitude towards the other fans.

The judging takes place between 12:15 and 1:45 and the winner is announced at 2.00pm. The winning team will get their picture shown on the big screen both before and during the game as well as receiving free Texans merchandise and tailgating passes for the next game.
