Vikings Football Team

Tailgating at a Minnesota Vikings football team game is a necessary experience especially in the frigid winter months. The Viking fans endure extremely cold temperatures and still manage to have a great time while supporting their team. By knowing the rules of tailgating at the Mall of America Field or Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and how to endure severe cold, you can enjoy it as the regulars who tailgate here no matter how cold or hot it gets.

The Lots

On game day, the parking lots open at 6 a.m. for the noon games, open at 8 a.m. for the midafternoon 3 p.m. games and they stay open for a minimum of two hours after the end of the game. Once you are in the lot you cannot re-enter the lot with the same pass. The stadium parking is $30 and a limited numbers of spaces are available for tailgating on three different lots.

The lots are called Purple Tailgate Lot 1, Purple Tailgate Lot 2 and Purple Tailgate Lot 3. Lot three is the only lot that can manage RVs and other large vehicles. You can purchase tailgating season passes to guarantee a space for Vikings football team home games.

Banned Activities

Local authorities patrol the lots where guests are tailgating, so follow the regulations. Violators can be fined, thrown out from the lot and the tailgate pass revoked without any refund. If you are a season tailgating pass holder, it can be revoked for the entire season depending on the infraction, which include:

  • Using wood burning fires
  • Dumping charcoal or litter in undesignated areas
  • Amplifying sound from your vehicle
  • Selling merchandise
  • Outside catering
  • Using open parking spaces for the party

If it is your first time tailgating at the Metrodome, you can always ask other tailgaters or parking lot attendants for the rules and regulations so you can enjoy your Minnesota Vikings football team tailgating experience.

Party on the Plaza

Interactive games, bands, live pregame coverage, autograph opportunities with past Vikings players, and Viking cheerleaders are the attraction of the Miller Lite Party on the plaza, located on the northwest side of the Mall of America. Opening 2 1/2 hours before the start of the game, food and drinks are available and entrance to the party is free.

VIP Tent

In the past, the VIP Tent has required season ticket holders to purchase an additional full season ticket package for admission to the VIP Tent but single game admission is in the works. As a ticket holder for the VIP tent, you have access three hours before kickoff, pregame open bar, live music, pregame buffet with carving station and other amenities.

Party Suites

Party Suites are available at the Mall of America Field and can easily accommodate from 24 to 64 people. A private suite consultant will plan the tailgating party with you. Appearances by team cheerleaders or former players, team gifts and a fully catered menu are all options for this tailgating party.

Cold Weather Precautions

It is possible to experience wind chill factors of 10, 20, 30 or more degrees below zero in the winters of Minneapolis. One of the advantages the Vikings football team fans have over their visitors is their ability to deal with extreme weather conditions, with the proper equipment including:

  • Wet gear including tarps, rubber raincoats and umbrellas
  • Propane heater
  • Electric socks, gloves or mittens
  • Ski masks and sunglasses
  • Jumper cables because dead batteries are very common

The fans of the Minnesota Vikings football team are proof, weather should not be a deterrent to having a good time. If you pack the right stuff and wear the right gear you can enjoy the tailgating experience at the Mall of America Field.
